Strong Woman of the month : Mary Pilat of Shabby Chic Boutique
Mary Pilat, owner of the Shabby Chic Boutique in Williamsville, always knew she would own a gift shop. Inspired by her mother who ran estate sales and a booth at Antique World, together they would venture out in search of vintage items to be resold or repurposed into unique home decor. Mary started her business in the basement of her house creating custom florals for various arts and crafts shown in the Western New York area while also waitressing on the weekends.
As business grew she bought a building on William Street in Cheektowaga with a storefront, and an apartment to help with the mortgage. Business continued to grow and she eventually converted the apartment into another part of her store, creating an enchanted place to browse. Eventually she relocated to Main st. in Williamsville. Mary’s love for vintage decor has led her to start repurposing antique furniture and home decor. By painting and distressing she brings new life creating a newly cherished piece.
One of Mary’s popular home decor items are vintage chandeliers. She collects them, and in some cases combines them, adding crystals and paint to create a new trending look before selling them in her boutique.
